Preliminary Notes -------------------- - This beta version will expire on October 31, 2014 and will be superseded by another beta version or replaced by the final release version. - This beta version is aimed at users of the current version 3.x of Diamond to inform them about new features in version 4. If you are not familiar with Diamond version 3.x, you should first try out the current Diamond 3.2 demonstration version: http://www.crystalimpact.com/diamond/download.htm. - Since the online help has not yet been updated to the new commands, dialogs, and functionalities and no manual or tutorial is yet available, we recommend using the "What's New" manual (available from the "Help" menu) that guides you through the new features of version 4. - Since this beta version is in an early state, there are still a lot of bugs, and some functionalities are still incomplete: -- Changes in structure documents may be saved incompletely in the original file format of Diamond 3 and 4 (the Diamond Document format, "diamdoc"). -- Changes may be restored incompletely when using the "Undo" or "Redo" commands. -- A banner with "Diamond Version 4.0 Beta 1" will appear in saved bitmaps, Windows Metafiles, and printouts. -- The "Video Buffer" is not yet buffering images from the "Tools/Video Sequence" commands or from the (new) "Tools/Photograph" command. -- POV-Ray is not included with this beta version. -- The "Start View" as well as the splash window that appears when Diamond is starting will be re-designed. - This beta version cannot yet - neither manually nor automatically - update to a newer beta version. (Later beta versions will do.) (In order to continue testing the upcoming Diamond 4 version, you have to download and install the beta version manually, following the link: http://www.crystalimpact.com/diamond/v4download.htm.) 2. Installing Diamond --------------------- Before you install and run the Diamond 4.0 Beta 2, you should check the following minimum system requirements: - Microsoft Windows XP, 2003 Server, Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 operating system. (Does not run with Windows RT!) - Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 or higher - Personal Computer with Intel or AMD processor with x86 instruction set - 512 megabytes of RAM - 3.8 gigabytes of free disk space - Graphics resolution of at least 1024 x 768 pixels (1280 pixel width or higher is strongly recommended), with at least 32,768 colors (”High Color”) Run the self-extractable installation file "Diamond-4-Beta-2-Setup.exe" and follow the instructions on the screen that will guide you through the setup process. This setup procedure will take several minutes. (Since there is a lot of data to be unpacked, this may become a lengthy task on computers with few RAM and few free disk space.) 3. Documentation ---------------- The documentation of this beta version is still provisional. We recommend using the "What's New" manual (available from the "Help" menu) that guides you through the new features of version 4. Although mentioned as command in the "Help" menu, a manual or tutorial (in PDF format) is not yet available for this beta version. The Diamond online help is not yet available, too, or is just preliminary. To access the Help Library in a later (beta or release) version when Diamond is running, choose the "Contents", "Index..." or "Search..." command from the Help menu. You can also access the Help Library from the Windows Start menu: "Start/Programs/Diamond 4 Beta/ Diamond Help". Besides this, you can open the online help context-sensitive by pressing the F1 key. 4. Online Update ---------------- Although the current Diamond version 3.x as well as the upcoming Diamond version 4.x is able to automatically download and install a newer version - if available -, this beta version cannot - neither manually nor automatically - update to another beta version. (In order to continue testing the upcoming Diamond 4 version, you have to download and install another beta version - when available - manually, following the link: http://www.crystalimpact.com/diamond/v4download.htm.) 5. Uninstalling Diamond ----------------------- a) Windows 7 and earlier versions: If you would like to uninstall Diamond, please click on the Windows "Start" button, then click on "Programs", and finally select the command "Uninstall Diamond" from the "Diamond" subfolder. Alternatively, you can also open the "Control Panel" from the "Settings" folder in the Windows "Start" menu. Afterwards, double-click on "Software" (on some operating systems called "Add/Remove Programs") in order to bring up the normal Windows software installation dialog. In the list, please mark "Diamond", then click "Change/Remove". As soon as the uninstall program has been opened, please click "OK" in order to remove Diamond. b) Windows 8: Unless there is no (regular) Start Menu available from the Windows 8 Desktop, the easiest way is to go to the Windows 8 Start screen and start typing "Diamond 4". While you are typing, Windows will provide you with a list at the right side of the screen, there click/tap on "Uninstall Diamond 4.0 Beta 2", which will start the uninstaller as described above under "Windows 7..." 6.
